Hey there, my amazing readers. I believe you guys are doing alright. Today I wanna share with you guys about my interesting fun experience of when I was in the lone star state, Texas. I was in Grapevine, Texas from November 2017 to 2018 so I got to spend Christmas in the lone star state of Texas. My first state to visit and stay was Texas so it was a really fun experience for me. I am honestly very grateful to have had that experience. You always hear everything is big in the US and then you go to Texas and it’s a whole new level of big. Everything is ginormous out there. I had a lot of firsts in Texas in terms of things that are only available and accessible in the United States so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
The other thing that made my stay in Texas just one of a kind was because I was on a travel exchange program and there were other South African students with me out there. So, it was a bunch of us who as far as I remember was all our first time in the US and we got to experience it together. I got to make new friends who I still stay in contact with and love dearly. I got to have a family away from home and just learnt to live and adjust to living with new people at a whole new level. We did not really know each other so we had to learn how to live with each other and look after one other. Honestly one of the best experiences I have ever had. When we were in Texas we all worked at Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. It was honestly so much fun from my end at least. I learnt to have an outstanding work ethic because we worked in the service sector. We were serving people in a new country who have different accents from ours and we had to do it like we were pros because the best was expected from us and we delivered. I say accents because there were so many times when people would approach us and enquire about where our accents are from and compliment us. If you have ever heard how people from Texas speak then you know sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge to hear everything they say but we had a job to do and we had to do it well. We were also working during peak season and at Gaylord they have a lot of fun Christmas activities so you can imagine it was always packed.
“IN THE END… We only regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.”– Lewis carroll
Sometimes we had to deal with people who were not very nice to us just because that is who they are but you were supposed to handle it like a pro with kindness and a smile on your face. I learnt so much from that experience and it is true when they say “in life we only regret the chances we didn’t take”. It was easy for me to be scared and make excuses like it’s a new country, I am scared, this and that. But I took a shot and jumped off the edge and three years later I have no regrets at all. If you have an opportunity that slightly scares you but a part of you wants to take it. I say jump. Take the chance and see what happens. There is no loses from it because you learn either way. If it doesn’t go well you still learn from it and if it does go well then what more could you ask for in life.
I had an amazing time. I learnt a lot. I paid rent for the first time in my life then. I went there alone but never felt alone for a second because life is truly what you make it. I got to travel around the US. I made money because I was working. I was a 21 year old African girl working a 12 hour shift, paying for my own stuff in a new country all by myself but never alone. Take that chance I tell you, you will not regret it one bit. It’s not like we did not hear horror stories about such things but we did it anyways, I did it anyways and said that’s their story it doesn’t mean mine will have to be that same way. Thanks for stoping by guys. See you next time and don’t forget to take care of yourselves!!!
